Discover with us the Transylvanian Saxon roots dating back to the 12th century, well preserved medieval villages, fortifications, citadels, castles, and cities. Within this package you will “travel back in time” in the unspoiled countryside, see how people managed to keep their traditions.
Arrival on Targu-Mures airport (if you will land on Cluj-Napoca or Sibiu airports the schedule will change accordingly), the tourists will be transferred to the accommodation in Targu-Mures and in the evening we will make a walking City Tour (guided tour of the historical and architectural sites in and around the city centre).
Breakfast and drive from Targu-Mures to Sighisoara (1 and 1/2 hours), Saxon medieval fortified town, also known as the birthplace of Vlad the Impaler, Dracula. A guide will present: the History Museum, the Weapon Museum, the Clock Tower, Dracula House; the Wooden Stairs, the School Museum, the Church on the Hill and the Cemetery; we will have lunch. In the afternoon we will drive to Viscri, and will we stop and visit two others Saxons villages, Saschiz and Crit. Viscri is a village known for the highly fortified church, originally built around the year 1100 and part of the villages with fortified churches in Transylvania, designated in 1993 as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Here we will be accommodated and have dinner.
After having a Transylvanian traditional breakfast, we will visit the Viscri Fortified Church, look at Prince Charles’ traditional Saxon house. We will learn to make traditional bread in an outside oven and have lunch. We will make a short trip to Rupea to visit a remarkable hilltop citadel built in XIV century. After that, we will have horse-drawn cart trips to local craftsman.
After a traditional breakfast, we will drive to Sibiu, on the way we will stop to visit Fagaras Castles, ranked on second place on Hopper’s top ten castles in 2014 “The World’s 10 Best Castles”: Is one of Eastern Europe’s largest and best-preserved feudal Castle complexes. Sibiu is one of the most important cultural centres of Romania, designated the European Capital of Culture for year 2007 and ranked as “Europe’s 8th most idyllic place to live”. We visit the Astra Museum, known as the Open Air Village Museum, situated in the Dumbrava Sibiului Natural Reservation, an impressive collection aiming to give you a good overview of the traditional Romania by displaying households from across the country. We will have lunch in the city centre and in the afternoon we will drive to Bazna, also a Saxon village and have dinner.
Breakfast from organic and healthy ingredients, here we can visit the fortified church and take a walk in to the magnificent forest around the village or you can have a few hours at your disposal to enjoy at a spa with mineral and salty springs. In the afternoon, we will participate at a wine tasting at Transylvania’s well-known wine region Tarnaveni, with traditions dating back to the XVIII century. Late afternoon we will drive back to Targu-Mures and be accommodated.
Breakfast and transfer to Targu-Mures, Sibiu or Cluj-Napoca airport.
